Up until the mid-2000s Chevy Chase was somewhere a couple of government workers could afford after trading up from a condo in DC. Back then it was down to earth people with a respectable but not extreme amount of disposable income whose idea of a nice shopping trip was the Gap or Talbot's. It has only been in recent years that the status-obsessed conspicuous consumers moved in and while they're unfortunately multiplying a very decent portion of the homes are still occupied by normal people.
