Why private:  My sabbatical is for the North American school year.  I don't want my kid to start in the middle of the S. American school year with a long break in Jan/Feb, but I know from our last experience in South America that many private schools operate on the North American calendar. You're right that many of those schools are bilingual, as opposed to immersive and that the ration of locals to expats isn't ideal....but  we're boxed in by my schedule.  That said I know that there are immersive schools and schools that serve mostly locals on the north american calendar (Cuenca has many of these, but we're hoping to avoid a city.  I love Cuenca, so it's a back up plan...though I'd love to be somewhere a bit more remote and somewhere I haven't spent time in already.  I think the main thing we'll give up with a private is economic diversity (lots of rich South Americans want to send their kids to "American style" schools, even with most instruction in Spanish.
