No, I used to be a server. Please understand that in most restaurants the servers have to "tip out" a percentage of their sales to the bartender, the bussers, etc. If you do not tip the server actually has to pay to serve you. I don't get why people are so excited to punch down and stop tipping. Most restaurant workers are not wealthy and waiting tables is hard work. I have a nice office job now and I worked WAY HARDER when I was a server and bartender than I ever have in my nice office job where I can sit/stand whenever I feel like it, go to the bathroom whenever I want, take a little break to get coffee, and oh yeah, people are generally nice and treat me with basic respect all day! Some of you are so hateful for no reason.
People are just sick and tired of “give me” culture. I wish we were like other countries. No tips! Period. Pay the workers fair wages but no tips!!
It’s not give me culture. Tipping your server is understood to be part of the social contract.
If this contract includes paying for ever-shrinking portions of overpriced food with the expectation I will pay an extra 15% or more for someone to fill a glass with water and bring food to my table [i]which is their durn job to do[/], and pay about 10% in food tax and sales tax on top of it all, you can keep your social contract. I have opted out. I refuse to feel extorted and ripped off for a simple meal where in some cases I am expected to get my own eating utensils and clear the table myself. A restaurant is not a charity. If a waitress wants extra money, she can rub my feet. I’d tip extra for that.
