My kid nailed the Gov exam but got a 2 in Spanish. Wondering how much of this affects the fact that our school makes kids take AP Spanish as sophomores if they want to get the IB exam. And has a terrible Spanish teacher all kids suffer through as freshmen...anyone else's kid take the Spanish exam as a rising junior?
Is that after year 4 of Spanish or what year?
At our school the typical sequence is Spanish 1 - 7th grade (and yes, it goes on the transcript!) Spanish 2 - 8th grade Spanish 3 - 9th grade Spanish 4 OR AP Spanish - 10th grade (savvy kids take AP Spanish to avoid the teacher who teaches Spanish 3 and Spanish 4) IB Spanish - 11th/12th grade
Our non-IB school starts same was but goes 4-5-AP, which is really drawn out. But most kids get 4s and 5s if they make it through all six years. So I wouldn’t worry too much and don’t compare scores with kids who took Spanish for 6-7 years (some take 1 over grades 6 and 7 for slower start/better foundation). I assume he can retake in two years for college credit if desired.
Our private doesn’t like language taken in middle school. Kids generally don’t start above level 1. They will test into Honors 1 if they do well on language placement. SP Honors 1, 2, and 3 and then the option of AP Spanish or Honors 4. The honors courses are very rigorous from the start—all in Spanish, many Spanish books assigned, etc
