OP, for a period of 6 years (starting when kids were 3 and 5) DH traveled mon through wed or thursday every 2-3 weeks for work. He did it so I could take a new job elsewhere and he negotiated telework/travel combination. We were making about 300k total. We hired an afterschool nanny who was also available to stay late in the evenings, etc. Yes, it was expensive, and we barely saved those years, but it allowed us to both keep our jobs and still put away a little for retirement etc. His salary continued to increase as did mine. Before then, my spouse also had a period of being let go 2x in as many years. it was tough, but he has stayed in his most recent job for 13 years. He did have to learn some hard lessons about corporate workplaces, his skills and his weaknesses (not a manager!). He did and he's found his niche in a good place. We ultimately moved back closer to his job (I got a new one) because we were tired of the travel. There were times that his being away was hard (esp when I had to also travel) but we developed a good routine and managed it. Fortunately my job was more flexible and if I had to stay home I did. Having an afterschool nanny really helped. I understand you have a disabled child and that adds an additional layer of concern, but I think you should give it a shot. I have a feeling you will be far more resentful of spouse if he is unemployed.
