Haha, not surprised. I grew up in UT in the olden days and they had also voted against fluoride back then. I had to take these disgusting pink fluoride pills at the insistence of my parents.
I was 10 or 11 years old when our water got fluoridated in the 60s. Back in those days toothpaste ads would extol the child who had only 1 cavity at their checkup. I've read the arguments against it and am not certain (also the level of natural fluoride in drinking water has an effect), but objections to fluoride have always been about "government control" more than anything else. What about the routine supplementation of milk with vitamin D or iodine in salt? Are we ready for a return to rickets and goiters?
With modern more balanced diets they are no longer necessary. The Vit D was added mostly for an ethnic minority who lived in cities in poverty who were prone to rickets. 20 min sun exposure a couple times of week gives you more Vit D than drinking 10 gallons of milk a week. But money is involved, and many in the public would cry they are being deprived of their vitamins and electrolytes, if changes like that were made, so it remains in this day and age more as a security blanket and marketing strategy than a necessity.
