It’s just commonsense and safety.

As another person flagged, nighttime construction is a thing. That’s when they work on the NJ turnpike or any other highway or bridge you will encounter.

And you will struggle to find a clean place to use the restroom between 1am and 5 or 6am.

And you might have a kid that doesn’t sleep well in the car…and an overly tired/cranky kid at 3am will be infinitely more annoying than during daytime hours.

I'm not OP, but I did this a lot of times when I had a kid who would sleep in the car. It's an uncommon choice, but it's a thing people do, and doesn't feel like a troll at all to me. It worked well for us.[/quote]

I realized I didn't say "why." For us, it was primarily to avoid traffic. Leaving at 1am let us get around New York before the day started and saved us a couple hours of travel time.[/quote]

My wife and I traded off driving while the other slept. She'd get fivish hours before we left, start the drive, then get three more hours or so after I took over. I'd get three hours of sleep at home, get in the car and get three more, then wake up and drive. Between the amount of sleep we got and the sun coming up we had plenty of energy to parent.[/quote]
