I'm French, living in the DC area. We've had a military parade for our FĂȘte Nationale on July 14th ever since the end of WWI, so I'm certainly not against such a display. However, it doesn't look good to hold one of the very rare military parades the US has ever had, on the President's birthday! Not good optics at all.
I agree, and frankly as an American I find it sort of odd that the French have those parades because it seems out of keeping with the national character in many ways, but you do you.
French PP again. Have you read the words of our national anthem, La Marseillaise? They're gory. It's a call to arms to citizens to protect their women and sons from having their throats cut by soldiers. When the song was written during the Revolution, the soldiers in question were Austrian. The song goes on to rant against tyrants, with numerous references to blood, blood-spattered banners, furrows in fields drinking blood, etc. Apparently it's Testosterone, Blood and Guts all the way in my country. It's BEYOND... but when you see my compatriots protesting in the streets and setting cars and government offices on fire, you'll see it's entirely in keeping with the national character! American progressives would call it... toxic masculinity :-)
