Back in the late Neolithic era, UVa used to offer a BS Physics to MSEE conversion degree. It usually took 24 months - both summers. First summer was EE499, which was undergrad EE core classes as a single intense course. The 2nd summer most worked on their research - which they usually wrote up during the last 2 semesters.
