Back in the 90s, it was standard to send announcements where I was from… and yes, most people were going onto college. I sent graduation announcements for my son this year to very close family and one friend. They are all Gen X and Boomers or older, and love seeing the photos. And yes, I somewhat expect their aunts and uncles to send a gift, just as I did with all of their children when I got their graduation announcements (total of 9 nieces and nephews).
It was not standard where I was from. We sent an invitation to the graduation party if people were invited but that was it. No one sent announcements that someone graduated and where they were going to college. The graduation party invitation didn’t have where they were going to college, ever. This was 1994. I asked my son if we could put a lawn sign, graduation sign or bobble head sign (joking but hopeful) and he turned them all down. We won’t be sending anything or putting up any signs by his request. Anyone close to us knows he’s graduating.
