I’m thrilled about these metal or weapon detectors and they should be at every single middle school in high school in the county. Other counties use them for school safety. They do work. It’s known to cut down on vapes and can prevent a weapon from coming into the school. Why wouldn’t you want that? These are serious issues that affect all students at all schools. The lines will get shorter and the kinks will get worked out. Safety is the number one priority and these are needed at every single middle school in high school. It’s terrible it’s taken FCPS this long. There was just a school stabbing! Vaping is at an all-time high, which kids get at school. Thank you FCPS for starting this process and please get more weapons detectors and better school security measures.
How do they detect vapes?
They don't. FCPS has been clear that the purpose is to detect weapons that could cause "mass casualty" like guns or larger knives. Nevermind that any high schooler could simply walk into their school after hours though various doors for the myraid activities that happen after dismissal and hide a weapon to be used the next day.
