I’m a Gen-Xer and yes I do see the phone addiction. There also is a little of entitlement from some new hires. But here is where I give props to Gen-Zers in my field (nursing): they have better boundaries and often won’t allow themselves to be abused by management. They speak up about safety issues, like short staffing. I think this generation also sees that work ethic doesn’t necessarily translate into success. For me, it’s hard to not have work ethic. But I know working hard does not mean I’ll get ahead. It’s about personality, who you know, who likes you, being a “yes” person to the higher ups. I still work hard, but some of these kids see the BS and are like “meh, I’ll do the minimum.”
+1. GenX here. I've seen the "yes" people not get ahead either. Just be no nonsense, but polite and do the job you're paid to do. When they don't need you or can hire others at lower cost, it just doesn't matter. They'll throw you off the train. I've had great reviews but I know I'm still here only because my customers require on shore staff. That's it.
