Imagine leaving your food alone with registered sex offenders, Third World illegal immigrants, sick and ill (HIV, hepatitis, etc.), ex-cons, deviants, and who the hell knows what else. Often delivering on someone else's account! People are freaking nuts. Anything to feel like there are proles "below" you, I guess.
Never look in the kitchen of most restaurants then, especially chain ones. 40 years ago I remember peeking in the kitchen of a restaurant when the door swung open, and every cook in their was just in boxer shorts and a wife-beater tshirt, and shoes, cooking away. Guess it was hot in the kitchen! I only eat at restaurants where I know the owner or the cook staff, or don't eat out.
Without a doubt, but restaurants are tightly regulated, have investors, owners, managers on duty, and other staff. Your food is alone with a random ass driver in their tinted window Nissan Altima for 10 to 30 minutes. Not only do I not want such men anywhere near my house -- with my name or phone number no less -- over my dead body would I eat food they had in their private possession.
Restaurants are also subject to random health dept checks.
