This is exactly what happens when men don't spend enough time with their boys. We divorced when my son was 14. From day 1 I decided that I'll talk to my son every single day post divorce. We were already closed. We talked a lot. We talked talked talked. We traveled together. Let me tell you it made a huge difference. He My son turned to be a great kid. Raising a boy is not easy.
+1. This is really important. Men who didn't end up in trouble later in life are the ones that spent a lot of time with dad. A lot killers, rapists, bandits, thieves etc were raised by single moms. Dad must be involved.
I don't know if this true or not, but I do know that from raising 5 successful boys, we dads have huge influence on them. They really do listen to us. But for this to happen, you need to have been in their lives from day 1. You can't suddenly choose to be a dad to a 10 years and expect him to listen to you at 14. I have friends who are divorced but they are outstanding fathers. Their ex wives may think otherwise, but one can be a great dad and yet a list spouse. Men in particular sometimes devote all their energy to their kids and neglect their wives. So OP don't give up. Keep talking to your son. Have a couple of days away with him just the two of you. Maybe go to a beach destination lay down by the beach and talk to him like you were talking to your friend (excluding some grown people topics of course). Trust me, this will get you closer to him.
