My uncle grew up in NYC, speaking Italian (dialect); the child of immigrants from Italy.  The bigoted slur he endured was similar: “WOP,” which was a derisive acronym slung at Italian immigrants, and which stood for “with out papers.”

Unfortunately, hatred of the other is nothing new in this country--it has always been present. My father's parents were Eastern European immigrants who immigrated to Cleveland. Although my father was US-born with an American accent, had a pale pink complexion, and didn't look particularly "ethnic," he was once called a WOP. I will never use the term "illegal alien." I will always use "undocumented migrant."

To be fair, it is proudly used by people on the right starting from the president himself who often wears the slogan on his hats. Social media messages by its adherents often end with MAGA!

I personally use it as shorthand for "Republican" or the "GOP" because, currently, it is the MAGA party and people who vote for the MAGA party are MAGA. If the MAGA party ever reverts to being actual Republicans, I will resume calling it the GOP and calling its followers Republicans. [/quote]

It is one thing to label oneself with a term like MAGA (like the n-word), but quite another when someone applies it to someone else. In one context, it’s benign. In another, not so much.[/quote]
