Tufts fits in well to the UAA schools and is likely a more natural fit there than in the NESCAC. UAC is Wash U, Emory, Rochester, Case, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Brandeis, Chicago. I think Hopkins used to be in it. All excellent schools, generally a notch below Ivies. No shame in being a notch below Ivies - that is still very highly ranked and recognized. Each has its pros and cons. Those who bash them are wrong. Those who think they are interchangeable with Ivies are wrong (though there are obviously specialized programs, circumstances, etc.)
I agree with this (one kid went to Tufts, the other to Wash U, and had similar edoucational and social opportunities and experiences, main differences being that Wash U’s campus is nicer but Tufts’ location is superior). I think the reason Tufts is actually underrated is that it should be compared to these colleges, but it is lacking a business and some other specialized undergrad majors that these peer schools, which have always had a university (vs LAC) focus, so is consistently ranks less without these. The Tufts academic offerings are probably more similar to a LAC’s (but it is missing the consistently small class sizes that LACs have). It probably needs to identify better and that it improve its ranking.
