I agree with the PPs who pointed out that no partner is better than the wrong partner, but the older I get the more I enjoy being around people who truly know me, not just randoms who let me in their bed. I don't think your spouse or romantic partner should be the sole source of companionship. That's unreasonable, and probably why so many people are in unhappy relationships. But having the ability to connect with another human is amazing, and it's a skill that you have to practice.

OP, you have better relationships with your kids now, and that's a form of companionship. It's also temporary. You have your "FWB", and that's fine. But where are your friends? Do you have any hobbies and people to discuss them with? True companionship, real connection with others, can't be overrated or overhyped. It's an essential part of being a mentally and emotionally well human being.
