Don’t care at all, let these wealthy schools fund themselves and get off the public dole. Signed, 2x Ivy grad
Totally agree.
The federal government is paying for research. The question is not the public dole. The question is do we want federally funded research. The results of research are not often for government use, although sometimes it’s purely for the government use, but for the advancement of knowledge. The research is in a wide range of areas and some may be important to different people at different times. Lots of cancer research, aging, MS, arthritis, genetic markers, dementia, spinal injuries, stuff like that. Also, how to improve propulsion for aircraft, how to improve integrated circuits, safety gloves, active noise cancelling, testing for food contamination that can done in the spot. Private companies don’t make this stuff up out of thin air. Maybe people think they should and that’s the problem. The underlying research comes from published research, often out of university. This isn’t the dole. It’s the foundation of innovation.
