Paul Weiss is a business. They deal with reality, not with wishful political thinking. Obviously they are expecting Republicans to be in charge for the next few cycles.
Lawyers have greater responsibilities than simply making money. The decision is a disgrace to the firm, and this DC lawyer has lost respect for the firm.
If I were till in a position of hiring big firms (I was deputy general counsel to a bank), I would think twice about PW's ability to zealously represent my interests before the federal government. They have proven they won't stand up for themselves, why would I believe they would stand up for me?
Sadly, the truth will likely be the opposite. This move is going to boost Paul Weiss's stock among corporations because the best government-facing lawyers are those who have an in with whichever the current administration is. A lot more gets resolved through negotiation, settlement, and back room deals then gets achieved by litigation and zealous advocacy. Thus, when it comes to legal matters, corporations hire insiders and those with connections to insiders no matter how those connections came about. With PW having effectively made a $40 million donation to Trump, the firm will have his ear and the ear of his DOJ, SEC, and other agencies. The only way PW will actually suffer financially for this is if activists make a big deal about this and hold corporations' feet to the fire by publicizing and shaming anyone who hires PW. If hiring PW becomes almost on par in stigma with hiring Giuliani after he became a pariah for being Trump's henchman, then corporations will flee the negative publicity and PW will suffer. I doubt that will happen in these days of short attention span and so much scandal unfolding daily.
