This is all drivel focused on the wrong things. Who is better??? There will be examples of bad MLS Next teams and good ECNL teams...neat. What matters is what opportunities does each league provide? If your kid stands out as a good player, where will they get more opportunities? In ECNL? Or in MLS Next where they can compete against MLS Academies, play in bigger tournaments, and face competition from overseas more often? We all know the answer. (If your kid doesn't stand out, then why the hell do you care anyway??) Stop caring about clubs and leagues like this is for you...I have the sticker on my BMW and the sweatshirt!!! Just care about what gives your kid the best look for opportunities. Clubs are using you for your money so use them back.
Let’s take a step back and analyze this objectively - lots of vested, biased interest from MLS Next and ECNL posting here, which is not helpful. Look, if your kid is really good, he is or will be playing for an MLS Academy team so this argument is moot. Question is for all the kids below that level - not good enough to make an MLS Academy but good enough to play for the local MLS Next or ECNL team. These kids are not going pro, so they are either angling for college soccer or just a good experience playing in high school. If the latter, clearly ECNL since MLS Next does not let you play high school. So it boils down to whether your non-MLS Academy kid will have a better chance of playing college soccer on a local MLS Next or ECNL team. I have not seen anything to indicate one is better than the other. All the stats saying how MLS Next kids get more college offers deceptively include MLS Academy players. It would be nice to see actual stats comparing college chances for non-MLS Academy vs ECNL clubs. But you know what? It is probably all moot since pretty much all college slots these days go to foreign players. So just enjoy high school soccer, that’s all American players will get.
