The Hamilton producers cancelled because Trump ideologues purged the professional staff and cancelled several existing events with performers because they didn't fit the Trump vision of what art should be. Lin Manuel Miranada took a stand against Trump and stuck up for the performing arts professionals, which is more than I can say about nearly everyone in Congress and all the billionaires kowtowing before Trump for fear of becoming slightly less rich. https://www.npr.org/2025/03/06/nx-s1-5319979/hamilton-kennedy-center-cancel The hit musical Hamilton is canceling its 2026 run at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. This is in response to President Trump's decision to take over the art institution last month. According to a statement by Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller on X, "The recent purge by the Trump Administration of both professional staff and performing arts events at or originally produced by the Kennedy Center flies in the face of everything this national center represents." The statement goes on to explain that the move to cancel was a business decision, as it would've been "financially and personally devastating to the employees of Hamilton if the new leadership of the Kennedy Center suddenly cancelled or re-negotiated our engagement."
This was a ridiculous, attention-seeking move by Lin Manuel Miranda. He should have kept producing Hamilton at the Kennedy Center because: 1) He should provide this opportunity to as many patrons as possible. Now is not the time to censor yourself. 2) Canceling because you believe someone "might" do something is not a provable harm done to you. Let the show run and if someone cancels your production, then you have a cause for damages. 3) Outside of ultra left-wing circles this looks like LMM did this to himself, and no one is up in arms about civil rights transgressions because factually there weren't any.
Oh please. The entire arts community has been wondering if Hamilton was going to be cancelled. The show already took a stand against Pence. This was a smart business decision and you have to get billionaires in their pocketbooks.
They didn't get Trump or the KC in the pocketbook! The KC gets most of their funding from donations. Now the most that Hamilton supporters can say is that they were "wondering if Hamilton might get canceled." They should have stayed and forced the issue. Then there would be a public outcry if they actually got canceled.
They are performing artists and crew, not your political props
