No federal income tax! Watch the real estate prices go crazy!
Why would any R members of Congress vote to eliminate taxes in a city that voted 92 percent for Harris? Not only is this terrible policy (in part because it would guarantee huge rent increases and drive home prices way up), it’s also bad politics. Not happening.
How long do you think it would remain that way? The Republicans cou,d point to DC and say look what happens when you remove Income tax. As for bad policy please you think they care?
I just don’t think there’s any political incentive for Republican lawmakers to vote to give all of us massive tax cuts. Washington is the enemy.
The incentive is that their rich pals could snap up homes and not pay taxes. While probably pushing current residents out.
Yes but how would they defend giving tax cuts to liberal Washingtonians in the first place? Again, think about how unpopular we, the people who live here, are to most Republican House primary voters around the country. There’s no way they will vote to do this.
Easily. They would say look at the “hell hole” Washington DC is now. We remove the burden on income tax, limit local taxes and remove the consumer protections laws, DC will be turned in to Monaco. Plus all the staff, senators and representatives living in DC will not have to pay taxes. Apartments will be turned in to condos, vacant office buildings with be either converted to condos or used as headquarters. It will be great!
Senators and representatives have to remain residents of their home states, so they wouldn't benefit from this change. I don't think giving huge tax breaks to the Washington residents that Trump and Musk demonize constantly as the deep state would be remotely popular with any Republican voters.
As much as it would be nice, I don't see this happening either, not with the "revenge" performative "draining of the swamp" and cheering on fake posts about RE collapsing all around DC. I would be happy if DC is cleaned up to look presentable as a capital city and doesn't experience dis-investment as part of "revenge". Maybe local taxes could go away or be reduced?
How could they eliminate or reduce local taxes? The federal government isn't going to have massive resources for new law enforcement here, they're shedding staff in every agency. The administration wants to crack down on graffiti, move homeless people out of areas where tourists visit (they don't really care if homeless people live elsewhere in the city), and sell off federal real estate. And they also want to punish the District and the region for being the deep state and voting heavily for Democrats. That is not a recipe for actual local governance that anyone who lives here is likely to find particularly enjoyable.
