I grew up in the 70s/80s. Maybe it was because I lived out in the country and lots of kids were rural and farm kids but no one cared about gender really at all. Traditional gender norms and expectations now mean that any girl who sin't feminine and into pink and glitter is non binary or gender non conforming and any boy who isn't masculine is seen as the same.
