You just have to be smart about traveling around. My kid knows to not walk home alone after dark if you must cross the river (they live in an apt across the river). You travel in groups if walking around at those times, much like you should be doing on campus and on most campuses. Even UIUC, which is in the middle of corn fields has crime because it's a college campus and CC attract criminals because students are often drunk, unaware, walking with headphones in, etc. So it's the perfect place to rob someone.
