Only 1 to Cal Tech and none to Harvey Mudd is more disappointing than none to Virginia Tech. The students looking at STEM aren’t focused on SMU or Tulane …Virgina Tech is likely a safety for the 7 going to MIT [/quote]

There are geographic reasons at play.  There is a definite bias towards east coast schools, except for Stanford and UChicago.  Very few to Berkeley, UCLA, etc.[/quote]

The counselors really try to steer the students into colleges with the right fit.  I'm sure matriculations happen to Va Tech and UMD, but probably never to the same degree as the selective private schools.  That is not an indictment of UMD and Va Tech, just the reality that a large public school is a much different environment than a private.   You naturally will see more matriculations to the more competitive private schools.[/quote]
