I would rather watch random little kids play basketball at a local rec center than the WNBA. The gaslighting, manipulation and media astroturfing involved in trying to make saps watch (and gamble on!) that awful league is on another level. The WNBA lost $50mm this last season for a reason: It is awful. The women can't play, they are slow, miss most shots, and frankly, 99% of them are angry and hideous.
+100 Women's basketball is absolutely unwatchable. Angel Reese is supposed to be a superstar, but her skills are absolutely atrocious. What's she do, shoot something like 29% on uncontested layups? Just awful. I saw a shot chart from one of her games the other week. 3-13 with 12 of those shots taken directly under the basket. Awful shooting. But people are watching because of her too she says. Lololol The reality is simple. Women's basketball is terrible. Everything every single post player does is about like watching middle school hoops. This is not the case for most women's sports. Most women's sports, even if they cannot objectively compete with men, are still enjoyable to watch. Soccer, Softball, Volleyball, Tennis, Track, Swimming, Hockey, Golf...all good, all entertaining. Women's Lacrosse is terrible, but that's because the rules are stupid. But Women's basketball is objectively terrible. I keep trying to be entertained, and...it's just horrible basketball. Nobody can jump. The missed layups are just like a Shaqtin' cut up. Nobody can handle like Kyrie (because the hand-to-ball ratio isn't there, I suppose?). It's just not fun. The utter lack of fundamentals is just so terrible, I've tried to watch a game and forget boring I was actively getting mad watching the game yelling "WHAT WAS THAT?" on like 7 straight possessions. It looked like 5 women who had never met before playing a pickup game. They don't get good enough coaching in HS and in college and by the time they get to the WNBA it's too late because they already are set in their ways and have bad habits. The Aces look so good because Becky Hammond is such a talented coach. WNBA is really bad, but it doesn't have to be. Lower the rim by 6-9 inches and all of a sudden it might be fair and exciting. Of course they look like JV players when they are the size of JV players. It's not just a lack of skill/talent, it's a difference in physical anatomy. Dunking doesn't exist. The WNBA and the agenda driven media are just never going to get over the fact that it’s clearly an inferior product compared to the NBA. Women’s tennis is popular because it is a very different kind of game to men’s tennis and, in some ways, is more enjoyable to watch in terms of rallies vs power serving. WNBA players, skilled as most of them are, lack the explosiveness of NBA players. It’s “the dunk” that the game lacks. Sure there are a few players who’ve managed it in a game but even when they’ve done it the dunks have hardly been spectacular “put it in a poster” ones. It's a snooze fest product being jammed down our throats.
If you Google “Angel Reese missed layup” you will see that there is a cottage industry of morons creating supercuts of Angel Reese drawing shooting fouls which the morons call “missed layups.” The reason that WNBA basketball looks like middle school boys basketball is that it’s mostly played at the same level. If you are not jumping to above or within a couple of inches of the rim (as boys do by high school), there is a LOT more room for defenders to interfere with your shot.
Except she isn't drawing fouls on most of those misses and more than a few are wide open
Meh. I watched several. All repeatedly showed one play where she grabs a terrible pass as it’s going out, throws it up hoping to score and misses. Then they showed plays where she drew shooting fouls. I saw no “wide open layup” misses. But again, a women’s layup is not a men’s layup. By 8th grade my son was coached to smack the backboard on every layup, and by 9th he was able to dunk. The women’s game is fundamentally different — whereas boys release the ball 6” from the rim (at most), girls/women release it 4’ from the rim. It’s a totally different thing.
Reese is a 44% shooter within 5 feet of the basket. There are other bigs in the 70s and 80s
