Legacy has no bearing at UVA any longer. At least- that’s what they say. If you have v deep pockets- as in big money donor deep- give it a shot test optional.
As of this year, legacies of any kind (OOS and in state) at public universities in Virginia may no longer be considered according to new legislation as of 7/1/24. It is outlawed essentially.
Then why do they have an essay asking about it?
I don't know, I am not in charge of the applications. But there literally is a LAW now against it. I am trying to explain it in as simple terms as possible. The law ALSO applies to donors (not just legacies). https://legacylis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?241+sum+HB48 HB 48, SB 46, took effect 7/1/24 In summary: Prohibits any public institution of higher education from providing any manner of preferential treatment in the admissions decision to any student applicant on the basis of such student's legacy status, defined in the bill, or such student's familial relationship to any donor to such institution.
It’s optional, and my guess is that they want to encourage local applicants and applicants from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds, not to mention students who have some creative/longstanding interest in UVA (was sent to lacrosse camp there as a kid, read research by UVA faculty as part of a school project and got interested in the terrain because of it, orange and blue were their favorite colors so they became a UVA sports fan, etc).
