I think there’s a reciprocal “rivalry”  between VA and MD. My friends and family from equivalent suburban MD expressed surprise/discomfort/unease when visiting VA ‘burbs (“you have the same stores we have!” or “I can’t find my way around here - can you help?”).

I get the MD hate we're the same way feeling sick if we have to step foot in MD.
