Crime is rare on campus, which is fully gated with only two entry points, both manned 24/7. My kid and I felt like it gave the place a boarding school feel, which was a big turnoff for my kid. Not to mention, the surrounding neighborhood is a different story when it comes to crime. Not somewhere a single female wants the sun to set on her. Have you looked at Sewanee? It has a lot of similarities to Rhodes, including the architectural look of its campus, but it's set on something like 10,000 acres instead of being walled into a questionable urban area. My kid loved it but ultimately decided it was a bit too far from city life, so she chose another LAC.
That's exactly what Rhodes feels like, especially after dark. There's no walking from campus to local coffee shops, bookstores, bars, etc. Even Sewanee has more stuff like that nearby (and it's actually safe to walk there). Rhodes students can live off campus senior year (used to be junior and senior year) but most don't because it's hard to find safe, student-friendly rentals near campus. Unlike at other schools, there's no "student ghetto" -- just a ghetto. A Rhodes student was murdered in his off-campus rental a couple years ago. Memphis is the pits.
