I understand that gays are not a 'protected class" in this situation. My opinion is that where the rental is in the owner's house, the homeowner should have more latitude in excluding tenants where the owner is uncomfortable with their lifestyle -- skinheads, neonazis, even gays.
You are in fact morally wrong, but legally right. According to the HUD site on Fair Housing at http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/program_offices/fair_housing_equal_opp/FHLaws/yourrights:
While I wouldn't have a problem at all renting to a gay couple, I think it is good that landlords who rent out units in their own house are exempted from the discrimination laws. They should be able to refuse anyone for any reason, and if it's just that they "don't click" with the person. We were contemplating buying a house with a rentable basement, and in hindsight, I'm very glad we didn't. I would have wanted to be very picky with the tenants and would have only wanted people with whom I'm personally comfortable (gayness would not have made me uncomfortable, though, and I agree that OP needs to reevaluate her perspective - especially, she should teach her kids that they shouldn't care about someone's sexual orientation).
