JLG's signature issue is defunding the police. It's what she ran on. It would be amazing if someone like that could get reelected, after the all the complaints we've had about out of control crime.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/...-democratic-primary/ She said the number one issue facing the city is crime, and followed it up with this: "I supported the (Secure DC) bill and helped strengthen it. It updates our criminal code to make it easier to prosecute serious offenses like carjackings and other gun crimes. Consistently prosecuting these cases is key to making D.C. safer. We also need effective violence prevention programs, better agency coordination, a well-functioning crime lab and 911 call center, support for victims, and policies that address hunger, housing insecurity, addiction, and mental health." She also never defunded the police, so maybe you can stop lying now? People's opinions change as more information is available to them...I know Lisa's did bc up until she decided to run she never had an issue with JLG.
Oh you mean after Lisa Gore got in the race and started picking up steam? Yeah, now, Janeese suddenly cares about crime. Maybe we should take that with a grain of salt given her *entire* record in office.
JLG has opposed Bowser's efforts to crack down on crime at every turn. She told the Washington Post we can't arrest 17 year olds accused of murder because that would traumatize them: Bowser proposal to toughen D.C.’s approach to crime draws resistance Council members and others appeared to oppose the measure that would make it easier to detain youths before trial By Emily Davies Updated June 27, 2023 at 8:12 p.m. EDT|Published June 27, 2023 at 7:10 p.m. EDT The D.C. mayor’s legislative proposal that would impose new penalties for gun crimes and make it easier to detain some youths awaiting trial encountered fierce resistance at a council hearing Tuesday, even as the city’s top federal prosecutor and a host of residents said the bill would help reduce violent crime in the nation’s capital. D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George (D-Ward 4) said the proposed legislation would be “incredibly traumatizing” to children. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/06/27/bowser-crime-bill-dc-council-opposition/
Here is a case of being misleading, though in this PP's case, he is probably just misinformed and not intentionally spreading falsehoods. George's complaint was about proposed changes to the law regarding the conditions under which juveniles can be held in detention. It has nothing to do with arrest, let alone arrest for murder. The PP is simply wrong about that. The mayor proposed changing the law to remove:
the requirement that a youth possess a firearm for the Court to determine if secure detention is appropriate for youth who commit a crime of violence or dangerous crime and restores the ability of the Court to consider whether youth charged with a crime of violence or dangerous crime are themselves at significant risk of harm such that detention is appropriate.
This is from the Mayor's press release here: https://onse.dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-announces-new-legislation-support-safe-and-effective-policing Basically, any youth accused of a crime of violence could be detained. The PP is fixated on 17 year olds, but this applies to any juvenile including those much younger than 17. This has nothing to do with youths arrested while in possession of a gun because they were already eligible to be detained. JLG's position was not that youth should never be detained, but that this was too broad and would lead to youth being detained when there were more appropriate courses of action. I'm sure many of you would still disagree with George and take the position that any youth, regardless of age, who is accused of a "dangerous crime" (whatever that is) should be immediately sent to juvy. Fine, take that position. But just be accurate about both your and JLG's positions.
