You have to be on Linked In. No ifs, ands or buts. It is not just for job seekers--in fact, I don't recommend using the Looking for Work button. The listing should match your resume and the photo headshot should be good. Anyone who hears your name for any reason may look you up there. Prospective speaking engagements, job inquiries, will all use LinkedIn, too. You don't have to like, to comment, to write for LinkedIn-you just have to be listed on it.
This is a joke right? Why would anyone NEED to be on LI? So dramatic. It is a waste of time.
DP. Not a joke. As a hiring manager, I look for consistency across LI and the resume - and check other online presences. And as the prevalence of people holding multiple jobs grows, transparency and accuracy about employment status on LinkedIn becomes even more important.
You don’t have hirevhue to do that for you?
Well, the recruiters do the detailed work for me, but I still look at both their resume and LI profile. Their profile can also reveal mutual contacts which I can use to start a connection with the candidate.
Sounds invasive. It's a nice way to judge people before even interviewing them.
Welcome to getting a job?
You are free to judge someone's professional credentials through their application, but digging through social media is creepy. Too many people are judged by their appearance before they even get an interview. And what do you do if someone doesn't use social media? Assume they're a serial killer or something?
Some of us are in public facing roles where it's important to be presentable and it comes with the job duties.
