I'm not sure it would be a great fit.  Flower shops tend to attract and promote the artistic side of people more than their horticultural knowledge.  My sister knows the basics about flowers, but only really the flowers that are used in arrangements.  However, she was very popular and her shop thrived with her there because her art background and artistic eye.  But there is less need for horticultural experience.

I think he would do better working in a nursery where knowledge of a multitide of plants is critical.  When people need to know about the vegetation that they have, issues, or when trying to figure out what plants will work in their local climate or in certain situations, they'll go to a nursery to ask, but no one would really consider going to a florist for such information.  I think his degree and background will be a bonus at a nursery, whereas those skills and knowledge would be rather wasted in a florist.  And I know a number of people who worked in a nursery and then kicked off various private businesses after building up clientelle from regulars who knew who to ask for questions.  I know one person who started that way and became an arborist making quite decent money.  I also know one who became a landscaper and had a good deal with the nursery where he used to work.  He would use them to acquire most of the plants he used and they gave him the employee discount even after he left.  In fact, our current landscaper who helped us with our property started at a nursery (not the same as the previous person).[/quote]
