Beyond the inclusion of an “S” for sports (S-STEAM, pronounced “esteem”), there is also now STEAM+ However, this insufficiently emphasizes the value of sports, and why sports really does need to be included, as S-STEAM.
This is so dumb. We used to call this “education.” The whole point of the term STEM is to describe math-based majors that are distinct from the humanities majors. Other languages like in German, Chinese or Japanese have a specific word for STEM that English does not. Including arts and sports into STEM is just playing with semantics and patting yourself on the back for being inclusive when we used to just call this a well-rounded education. Doing so doesn’t change the fact that STEM majors exist and that people will need a term to describe them
I don't actually think they do, though! A biology major, pure math major, engineering BA/MA student, geology major, and "health administration" certification student are not at all doing the same things that need to be described by one term. They don't have the same educational needs or career paths. I am not saying science isn't important, but STEM is made up.
STEM and STEAM are hardly “made up” as you put it!
