I come from what I always figured was a moderately liberal Christian family. we supported the civil rights movement, supported women's right and immigration. My family is still that way but my dad is considering voting for Romney this time around (he voted for Carter, Clinton, Mondale, Obama etc) because he feels that the leadership of the country is rudderless and this time around feels like Obama is divisive. Compared him to GW Bush. I think the Democrats need to swing back to the center after this second Obama term.
Your father either does not know what his values are, or else he has fallen victim to the very well-funded Republican narrative about Obama. You can't be for civil rights and vote for the party that is trying to strip minorities of voting rights. Obama is not divisive - his failures of leadership are largely due to his attempts at compromise with Republicans who are moving to the right as fast as they can. Democrats do not need to 'swing back to the center.' If you look at their policies, they have not moved to the left in the past 20 years.
