I smile, I say hi, I can make a minute of friendly chit chat here and there -- but that is where it ends. I'm older and I have learned that it is important to keep a polite distance. I've lived in a handful of places, and it usually takes about two years to figure out where the lines lay when you move into a new neighborhood. Everyone is polite up front. It is only later when you find out who hates who, who has had a bad exchange with a neighbor, who is the narcissist (there is always at least one), who exhibits sociopathic tendencies (there is always one), etc. Usually it rips wide open after a few years and you get the real lay of the land. Yeah, I gladly keep to myself.
+1. I’ve lived in my neighborhood over 10 years and pp is correct. I have elementary aged kids and we were with neighbors all of the time during COVID. As time wore on, we caught on to the users, the fakes, the narcissist, and the sociopath. Luckily my kids have gotten older and heavily involved in activities outside of the neighborhood. I don’t see them much anymore. Keep it friendly but don’t be too close!!
