I just pulled up the posted numbers for the elementary school I work at and incidents are woefully underreported. Just one suspension and everything else is zero, which doesn't match up with reality at all. :(
Admin definitely sweep a lot of incidents under the rug.
Because they can. We have the Clery Act that requires reporting of all incidents on campus, but it only applies to higher ed institutions, not K-12. We should have something like this at the K-12 level. Clery Act passed because just like MCPS, universities have incentives to sweep incidents under the rug instead of informing people. If you remember the Rockville HS alleged gang rape in a bathroom a few years ago, parents found out only a few days later, because the MoCo police issue press releases for incidents like this. MCPS had told the parents nothing about it up to that point. Then MCPS had to scramble to hold a parents meeting and so on.
We really do need a K-12 version of the Clery Act. Is any organization lobbying for something like that?
Are you sure it's even lawful for MCPS to comment on active investigations involving minors?
