How large does UF’s campus feel? I see a lot of video tours where mopeds are everywhere. Is a bike/scooter/etc. a necessity for a freshman? Can you reasonably walk from place to place, or do you need to rely on the bus or other methods of transportation? We have visited UGA, and it is very large with lots of hills, but it felt like the bus system was very efficient. I did feel like the bus was necessary in certain situations there, but not necessarily in a negative way.
Freshmen living on campus definitely do not need a bike or scooter--you can reasonably walk throughout most of campus. Most of the scooters are owned by upperclassmen who live off campus because they are a lot easier to park. They aren't really necessary either though because the bus system in Gainesville is excellent. The one spot on campus that I'd think a student might want or need to go regularly that isn't super easily accessible is the main gym (SW rec), which is on the edge of campus (there's more than likely a bus that will get you there, but I drove so I can't say for sure). The ag school has some classes out there too, but obviously that only matters if you're an ag student.
