Catholics are expected to fast for 30 minutes before receiving communion, so snacks and drinks are not a thing during mass, except for tiny children who do not receive communion. Plus it’s a beautiful space that should be treated well. If people start bringing coffee it’s only a while before people start spilling coffee.
I was raised Catholic and never knew about fasting before mass!
It's an hour before receiving communion, which is usually 30ish minutes before mass starts. And it sounds like you had pretty awful CCD/ religious ed if oyu didn't know that.
I also grew up Catholic and never knew this, but communion was at the end of mass for us. I have not heard of communion before mass.
I think that person means that since there are about 30 minutes of mass before communion, the "hour before communion" means "30 minutes before mass" and then the first 30 minutes of mass. Not that the church holds communion, waits 30 minutes and then has mass.
