Does your kid want to go to grad school?    If he wants to be cutting edge fields, he really needs a grad degree.

Is he more interested in fundamental physics?  Like particle physics (high energy), astronomy etc?   Is he interested in device physics?  With all the chips and science investments, we are going to need more of those folk.  There is of course quantum physics.  Perhaps he wants to do engineering modeling?  Like for hypersonics, combustion, energetics, or other highly complex environments.  We need plasma people for fusion.  And then there is the condensed matter people who are a cross over with materials science.

Whatever he wants to do and wherever he goes, make sure he gets some internships.  Ideally some research experience.  And definitely get his coding skills up there. [/quote]
