If a dress retails for $180+ at Nordstrom but you can get the exact same dress (same brand/same print) at TJ Max or Nordstrom Rack for $40, what’s the difference?

There is no difference. It’s the same flipping dress.

No, they don’t. I’ve owned many of the expensive ones. Why would they “fall apart”? The ones linked at the rack are made for the rack, never sold at the actual Nordstrom store for full price. That’s not how most of the merchandise at the budget stores is acquired. It’s made for those places: they get limited inventory from the actual main store. But it’s not this stuff. Jujst a heads up for others looking, I ordered 3 dresses from Oliphant last summer and they basically fell to shreds within a few wears. I was VERY disappointed with the quality. The one that had embroidery was a mess of loose threads and I had to toss after maybe 3 wears? Their customer service was also non-existant. They would not take the items back and they never posted my negative review (normal I guess, but annoying). I love their style, but everything was so cheaply made I will never order again. -I swear they buy these things for like 4 dollars in India and mark them up insanely. [/quote]
