True and, all things being equal, this point could break a tie. But only if that student isn't needed to fill a particular bucket.[/quote]

That student could have a 1600 SAT and glowing recs about original academic work. If the choice is between him and a student with a 1450 SAT and very good but not stellar academics, the first one will get in even if the second student has done all their homework on Dartmouth and is dying to go there. Dartmouth (and other top schools) don't really care that much. This speaks to the point about alumni not seeing the applications.[/quote]

Sure but, once again, the alumni interviewer knows none of these details. They might adore a kid who hasn't submitted a stellar application.[/quote]
