Not a bizarre suggestion at all. Some California community colleges are really good and have guaranteed pathways to UCs. Community college tuition for out of state would be around 8k. Then I believe UC tuition would still be out of state but you would have saved on the first 2 years. [/quote]

Exactly. There are many out of state students at some of the more geographically desirable community college like Santa Barbara city college but housing in Santa Barbara is crazy expensive and hard to find. [/quote]

But then you end up with an associate's degree, and as a non-resident are you guaranteed a transfer spot to a 4-year university in CA the way it works for in state residents? Looking at the SB community college page and it's not clear.[/quote]
