Isn't this going to just shut out kids who are below top the 10% of a high school class from any top 40 schools? I worry about this. If you have your very top students applying everywhere in mass then the next level looks comparatively lousy and what happens to them? this is especially true in privates when you may have 10 kids who have a 3.95. If they apply everywhere, what happens to the 3.7-3.8s? Traditionally they would get some spots at top 40 schools that the top 10 students ts did not apply to or matriculate to. I assume the 3.5 or so (at privates where this can be half of the class) and below apply to different schools entirely.
Yep. The hooked kids will gobble up a dozen acceptances each. And standard strong will be shut out or end up at safety. Not talking 3.7 either. Talking 3.9s who are otherwise unhooked. Forget it if you’re looking at competitive majors. This is why top privates limit apps
They do this to protect their matriculation reputation at the Evie de of students. Please.
Well they do it at our school and it's because there are too many double hooked kids. It's a competitive private school to get into in the first place w tuition at 60k and substantial FA. So there are 15-20 kids who are double legacy and dad is at a top hedge fund, and a Prep for Prep kid who was also president of the class, and a History Day winner with a 3.9 and legacy at two ivies, and a top ranked squash player who also is a published poet (and a 1600) and whose mom has an Oscar. Colleges look at applicants by school. Your standard strong kid is not ever going to rise to the top 4 or 5 kids if you allow those 20 kids to apply widely. It may protect the school's reputation, but parents understand the benefit to their own kid. This is NYC though and if you're telling me that this doesn't happen in DCUM area, okay, I believe you.
