She has a brain. Brearley is generally regarded as the most prestigious of the all girls schools in Manhattan. Yes, it's very expensive. But as private schools go, it is very generous with financial aid. It also has a reputation for rejecting girls who are legacies from wealthy families who are not particularly smart themselves. Decades ago, it was the "blue stocking" school. (See this is you aren't familiar with that term.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluestocking ) It admitted Jews at a time when some of the WASPy private schools did not. It was NEVER the kind of school parents enrolled their daughters in with the hope that they would meet a nice rich boy and marry him shortly after her coming out party. It was the kind of school that wealthy parents who valued education and wanted their daughters to be as well educated as their sons chose. So, yes, most--though certainly not all--Brearley girls are from wealthy families, but it also has a rep as an academic pressure cooker. College matriculation is impressive. https://www.brearley.org/student-life/upper-school/college-advising
Which schools do parents send their DDs to with hopes that they’ll hook a rich husband?
As the old adage goes - Chapin girls date doctors, Spence girls marry doctors, and Brearley girls are doctors.
Thanks! Very helpful. If this is indeed true, I’d aim my girls for Spence!
It’s not, but the adage is reversed for Chapin and Spence. Historically, Chapin had the reputation as the WASP-iest and had the most generational wealth. Spence’s reputation was that it was flashier took girls from new money families. Brearley admitted girls from a wide array of backgrounds — they didn’t care as much about status as their academic aptitude. They also trained girls for careers; Chapin and Spence valued education, but a working wife was frowned upon. Of course, these are wildly outdated stereotypes, but if folks are going to talk about them, then they need to understand where they started. Also, comparing these schools is also like comparing HYP. One might have the most name recognition, but these schools all have top-notch academics and are considered the best in the country. Families often apply to all three and often only get into one, if any.
Ugh, I made typos here, but the point still stands. OP, if your son's GF made it through Brearely, then she's fiercely intelligent and has a thick skin.
