Using the Census categories, the breakdown was Total whites: 291,300 Total free colored: 9,914 Total slaves: 402,406 Total Indians: 88 57% of people in South Carolina in 1860 were enslaved. The average person in South Carolina in 1860 was an enslaved person. [/quote]
