W-L HS was the first APS school to get rebuilt from scratch 20 years ago. The old building was literally falling apart and filled with asbestos from decades of deferred maintenance. Teachers there had actually sued the district over health problems from air quality annd mold issues. That school is physically on the 22201/22207 border and no one questioned why it was the first of the schools to get rebuilt—then the most expensive high school project in the state. Rebuilding and renovating every school takes decades since schools deteriorate over time and at different rates. Of course, with deferred maintenance, the renovations or rebuilds end up being more expensive. Public school districts in general, however, tend to defer maintenance due to other “more pressing” needs. APS is no different from other districts. [/quote]
