I would not do NC or Richmond, honestly.  Cary isn't close enough to research Triangle and NC gets rural/southern really quickly.  I'd personally go with New England over the south unless being warm is a major need.

What about Arizona?  colorado is also surprisingly diverse in places -- the college towns  / Boulder for example, but going up in cost.  Also would consider Atlanta/Georgia area maybe before NC, but same problem - you have to really choose carefully.[/quote]
