My grandparents are dead, but would be in their late 90s if they were still alive, and I never heard them refer to Italian Americans as "othered"--and yeah, if they really felt that way I would have known. They grew up as Irish-Americans in Boston.[/quote] My Irish-American grandparents did not go my aunt's wedding because she married an Italian-American. Some of the other families did because "at least he was Catholic" Italians aren't white[/quote]
