So we just move away and pretend these kids don't exist? This is WHY we have an underclass, and the gap is growing. How very sad for many of these students who are hard workers and kind! But in your eyes they're a negative influence on your children. I get it. nice job in trying to level the playing field
NP here. I was once idealistic, and then reality set in. My kids are only in elementary school but between working full-time and trying to make sure my own kids get the foundation they need (read threads on curriculum 2.0, math curriculum, issues with differentiation in the classroom, plus having a child with mild ADD), I have no more time/energy left over. Plus, my experiences in going to Board of Ed meetings, community input meetings etc., is it seems like one parent cannot make a difference and only with a critical mass of parents raising holy h@ll do you even get an acknowledgement that perhaps there might be a tad bit of room for improvement in one of the best counties in the U.S.A. I've also spoken to parents across the MoCo spectrum and while people have done well at schools that aren't the top of the county test wise, when there are issues that don't impact the school testing AYP, there is really no one accountable to make sure your child gets what he/she needs ...you have to hope the teacher is that kind of teacher to go beyond or the principle is the type that tries to really partner with parents and that's true for red and green zone schools. Like the OP, I also lived in a not so great neighborhood but in NY. I think the teachers were good, but there were a lot of kids that were not motivated to do well in school, and that made it tough on the kids that were motivated. A good education could be had, but you had to be able to resist peer pressure or be one of those kids that could pull As and still be either popular or atleast left alone. Back to the OPs question, I would consider BCC. I'm guessing that you want a school with high test scores etc. but not where most of the kids are driving better cars than the teachers.
